Hydroelectricity Generation Trainer

Description: This trainer demonstrates the generation of electricity by a hydroelectric turbine and generator system. In this type of electricity generation, the potential energy in either a very large reservoir of water or run-of stream is converted into electrical energy through the use of various types of water turbines. This generated electricity is then directed either locally for use or fed into an electricity transmission system.

The generation of electrical power in a hydroelectric facility involves the conversion of mechanical potential energy to mechanical kinetic energy, and finally to electromagnetic energy. The three main functional blocks of any hydroelectricity generation system are: the reservoir/penstock, the hydraulic turbine and the alternator/generator. The penstock converts the potential energy stored in an elevated mass of water into kinetic energy. The hydraulic turbine converts the kinetic energy of the moving water into rotational energy. The alternator/generator converts the rotational energy from the hydraulic turbine into electrical energy.

To provide for student understanding of hydroelectric generation principles, the Micro-Hydroelectricity Generation Trainer (HEGT) comprises a complete small-scale hydroelectric energy transformation and control system. This trainer will include on the skid everything needed to generate electricity using the energy of water-flow in a teaching laboratory environment.
  • a water reservoir
  • variable output pump to produce different combinations of head and flow required for different types of turbines
  • several different water turbines/generator combinations,
  • option of
    • ocal variable load of electrical resistance heaters and/or motors
    • grid interconnection controls and switch-gear.
  • all necessary monitoring and control components
  • data acquisition modules and software
  • The entire training system includes all of the documentation needed to integrate this trainer into energy curriculum including: manuals covering student exercises, instructor operating notes and technical documentation.
The Micro-Hydroelectric Generation Trainer will to be constructed primarily from commercially available components and sub-systems, with enhanced instrumentation for improved student understanding (combined with the custom designed training exercise modules).

Equipment Specification Highlights: Reduced-scale hydroelectric generation trainer comprising:
